Hidden inside trees are their life stories. Fascinating tales that move me to elaborate and bring them to light Insect holes, knots, and ingrown bark are rerely seen vestiges recorded in the wood. To accentuate these natural voids, I inlay bright, contrasting stone, shell and metal. Combining natural elements in a way that preserves their individual qualities promotes synergy while eliciting hidden detail.
Wood is like a painter's canvas started by nature. The colors, grain, and figure are already there as is the array of voids. I relish the challenge of working on this canvas within the wood. I look for patterns within patterns and use inlay materials like paints. Organic shapes and sinuous edges unify my design. They also invite touch, completing the experience of seeing.
